Hollywood Film Company Comes Home to the Bay Area
Film director Willo Hausman has returned home to the Bay Area to shoot and produce CLARE, her first feature film. Hausman and her film company, Gryphon Pictures, have taken the project from concept and her home of 14 years in Los Angeles to New York, Chicago, North Carolina and Tennessee to assemble the investment and production teams before finally relocating her in the Bay Area to scout locations and begin shooting.
The same Movie and TV audiences that are charmed by Buffy, Sabrina, Harry Potter and the medium are sure to be taken under the spell of Clare. Clare is a darkly comedic murder mystery revolving around a clan of modern day witches living in downtown San Francisco. Spiritual kinky in tone, Clare is adapted from a book that has haunted her imagination since she first read it growing up in Larkspur attending Redwood High School. Witchcraft and the supernatural are littering movies and television. Most are catering to kids spellbound by special effects or fans of witch-kitsch. Hausman’s Clare sets itself apart from the recent trend with a clever plotline that avoids the pitfall of taking itself too seriously, while remaining authentic.
Hausman and the Gryphon moniker are Bay Area born, the progeny of a team whose creative magic originated in San Francisco and would later be a Hollywood legacy. Her parents are well known Tinseltown legends: Willo’s father, Michael Hausman (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0369592/) is a rare combination of Hollywood heavy hitter and hands-on everyday producer known for such titles as Silkwood, Amadeus and Gangs of New York, while her mother, Diane Varsi (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0890215/) was the Oscar nominated actress who refused the lure of La-La Land because it compromised her spirit. Hausman was a painter and Diane was estranged from the studio system. Not long after Willo’s first birthday they parted ways, Hausman making his life in the film industry and Diane settling in Marin County to raise Willo.
Willo brings experience that ranges from her start as a production assistant on Nobody’s Fool to extras casting on People vs. Larry Flynt and camera production crew on Man on the Moon back to her North Bay stomping grounds with a project that will a boon to the local film community before it finds its home as a cult classic.
